It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Edith Ballantyne. She died peacefully in hospital on March 25, 2025, after a sudden infection. She would have turned 103 on December 10, 2025.

Edith was a strong, independent woman with a sharp mind and a fierce spirit that never waned. Politicized at an early age, she devoted her life to the pursuit of peace, social justice, and equality—principles she believed were inseparable. “You cannot have one without the other,” she often reminded us. She believed in the immense intelligence and capacity of humankind to do what is right and just.

As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Edith provided steady guidance, unwavering support, and deep understanding. She gave so much of herself to so many, and was adored, admired, and respected by friends and colleagues of all generations, across the world.

As her children, we want to express our deep gratitude to the close friends who stood by her side in recent years, helping her meet the everyday challenges of aging with dignity and grace. With your help she could remain independent and continue to take great joy in life.

Edith was not religious and did not wish to have a memorial service. However, we know some will want to pay tribute to her and share your memories. To that end, her close friend Felicity Ruby has created a website (https://edithballantyne.org) where stories, reflections, and messages can be shared in her honour.

We will miss her dearly—and we will carry forward her vision and efforts to make the world a better place. We encourage all to do the same.
