My daughter Lillian took this selfie during a visit to Edith a few years ago— I loved my visits to Edith apartment and treasure them.
Edith was the most beautiful soul—wise, politically astute, and deeply, deeply kind. I am forever grateful for her vision, her truth, and the time she so generously gave. WILPF was in her heart and to have someone like Edith was a gift to WILPF, someone who loved the people (understood them as they are) and aligned with the principles, never the power. She was unwavering, and always guided by justice.
Over lunch plates at her table, she once told me, “We need to be the example of cooperation—real cooperation and working together.” That was Edith. She believed in collective strength and held us all to that higher standard. Before each visit, I would make sure to read up on politics, knowing our conversations would demand thoughtfulness and depth. I enjoyed the quiet lunches, and celebrating her 99th birthday with her, surrounded by friends, discussing Afghanistan.
I woke up this morning crying in my sleep—mourning the loss of Edith, feeling the weight of saying goodbye. But more than sadness, I hold gratitude for having known her. Rest peacefully, dear Edith. My love to your beautiful family, your friends, and to all the WILPFers who were lucky enough to walk alongside her. 💜💐
