I first met Edith when I was asked to organise WILPF’s 100th anniversary. While I felt the weight of this immense responsibility on my shoulders having only been with the organisation a year or so before, Edith immediately put me at ease. Rather than be terrified of disappointing everyone for whom WILPF and the 100th meant so much, she made me feel confident that I brought no more or less to WILPF than any of its other members and that I could make a valuable contribution.
From then on, I turned to Edith as a wellspring of wisdom and inspiration.
Her stories about the history of WILPF, her adventures and shenanigans with her fellow members, her encyclopedic knowledge about peace movements, her incredibly strong moral compass and her warmth and generosity I will always remember incredibly fondly.
Upon the sad news of her passing I’ve looked back at some of the recordings made of Edith at the 100th anniversary and am hearing new things I didn’t pick up on back then – so even now she continues to guide me and shape my thinking.
Rest in peace, power and love dear Edith.
