Edith Ballantyne

Edith was President of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO) from 1976-1982. I was then in my forties, and participated in several of the CoNGO sessions where Edith presided. The period was in “the heat” of the Cold War, and NGOs were also sharply divided. While Edith’s political views were probably not those of the majority of the Conference, she exercized her presidential responsibilities with strict openness and attention to all opinions.
When, thirty years later I became President of CoNGO (2011-2018), I was frequently in contact with Edith, with so much still to learn from her experience and sound judgment.
CoNGO interviewed Edith for her 100th Birthday (the video was shown at a CoNGO General Assembly) and we were all in admiration at her continuing lucidity and her sound conclusions as to what was still needed to achieve her lifelong goal of Peace in the world.
Our best tribute to Edith is to continue to work unceasingly towards that goal.
